Abstract
The wild bee fauna of Corumbataí (São Paulo State) and Paraopeba (Minas Gerais State) and an analysis of the Biogeography of the bee in the Brazilian Cerrado (Hymenoptera, Apoidea). The bee species of two areas of cerrado vegetation in the States of São Paulo and Mina Gerais are listed. The faunas of these two sites are compared with those of other areas covered by cerrado and other vegetation types. The local faunas of the cerrado, relative to those of other Brazilian biomes, are rich in species, but composed of low-density populations. They are characterized by large proportions of species and individuals of the oil-collecting genera Centris, Epicharis, Paratetrapedia and Tetrapedia, and of Meliponinae. Part the differences observed in the bee fauna of the cerrado, compared to those of other biomes, may be due to the association between bee taxa and characteristic plant groups. The cerrado bee fauna, however, is geographically heterogeneous and does not appear to be a cohesive historical assemblage, but rather the results of local speciation events and faunistic interchange with neighboring biomes. It is suggested that endemic elements associated with the cerrado will probably prove to be rare species or species with disjunct distributions.
